Creephyp’s new song, NIGHT ON THE PLANET.

This month marks 10 years since CreepHyp’s first major album debut, “死ぬまで一生愛されてると思ってたよ”. They released their newest album “夜にしがみついて、朝で溶かして” in usual CreepHyp fashion: using a one-liner from their song as the title of their album. The album’s name comes from lyrics out of this song – Night on the Planet. Which gets its name from a movie.

Night on the Planet (or, as the title is called in English, Night on Earth), is a 1991 art comedy-drama film directed by Jim Jarmusch starring the stunning Winona Ryder. The story follows taxi drivers in multiple major cities who, somehow or another, become involved in their passenger’s eccentric lives. CreepHyp wasn’t the only band to use it as inspiration – Omori Seiko also has a song with the same title.

Going a level deeper, this song was also used for the promo of the movie “ちょっと思い出しただけ”, the title being another lyric from this song. The director is a friend of CreepHyp, and Ozaki makes a cameo in the movie.

The idea of being a taxi driver in a big city like Los Angeles or Tokyo sounds thrilling. You might be taking the next hit celebrity to their life changing audition. Maybe you are driving a failed star back to the airport.

Big cities are full of people looking for something bigger than themselves. And, that’s the story of this song, inspired by the movie, which inspired the other movie.

Overall, the album is great, and one of my favorites CreepHyp has ever released. Ozaki’s sarcasm, innuendos, and rhymes really bop. I won’t be able to translate those parts well enough to showcase his brilliance, but I hope you enjoy knowing the meaning of the lyrics.
