5 Nights, 20+ Bands, Zero Gatekeeping: Inside Tokyo’s Music Bridge Showcase

Tokyo’s live music scene can feel a little closed off at first; especially if you’re not bilingual, or don’t already know someone in the room.

Music Bridge Tokyo is busting down the door with their international indies artist showcase.

  • Five days of non-stop music (April 8-13)
  • Five venues
  • 20+ artists
  • A global spread of artists: Japan, Australia, Korea, Singapore, America, and more!

It is a rare opportunity to experience Tokyo’s global music scene from the inside! Keep reading to see how to get a ticket and who to check out.

    3. Asian Ground
    4. Molar System – Dreamy indies from Korea

How to Get Tickets

The full day, multi venue crawl event is held on 4/10. Over 20 artists are playing from all around the world – Japan, Korea, the USA, Australia, and more…!

Tickets are 4,500 yen (about $35) if you buy in advance, and half off if you are a student.

The wristband includes access to all venues with re-entry.

The other four days are FREE, and the showcase is held nightly at a fantastic international DIY venue in Asagaya called Gamuso – one of my favorite bars to hang out and meet other music lovers.

You can reach out to @musicbridgetokyo for questions and more info.

The Recs

Floral Sky – The Aviators bringing an alt/indies blend from Singapore

Floral Sky is a Singapore-based indie-alternative/power pop project led by Juan Sawit, who aims to blend heartfelt songwriting with catchy hooks and atmospheric soundscapes.

Floral Sky is making a stop at Music Bridge and will continue their Tokyo tour at some of the local live houses and record stores – another great way to catch more of the local scene.

Even if you don’t know Floral Sky yet, they will have you leaving the show as a new fan. If you are going in to the event blind, I guarantee their riffs and energy will have you tapping away and enjoying the night immediately!

MOON ROOM – Bittersweet x Tokyo Surf Rock

Didn’t wanna hold my hand, never came to see my band…

but you should go see Moon Room. Moon Room makes indies/surf rock (with the slightest tinge of pop punk!) anthems for the folks ready to forget their ex… and sip on a piña colada in heart-shaped sunglasses, unbothered in Santa Monica.

Kris (with a K) blends his roots from California with his time in Tokyo, making some of my favorite tunes to sway along with live.

Not biased, but I got to play bass with Moon Room this summer for their EP release. It will always be one of my favorite gigging memories. Even though it’s been a few months, the melodies are STILL stuck in my head.

I think they will get stuck in yours, too.

Asian Ground

What a crime these guys have only ten monthly listeners! Who wouldn’t want to be in the easy smile community?! ☻

Asian Ground is from Japan and makes wild punk smashed with carefree fun. If you already know a little about JP punk music: think the melo-core stuff like Hi-Standard, with raw chaos like Ging Nang Boyz.

Punk shows in Tokyo are always a good time. Get out there and show the world you know how to mosh!

Molar System – Dreamy indies from Korea

Molar System is a rising artist from Korea, and as their bio shares: they don’t know much about anything.

They are dreamy, a little detached, and bring some banging melodies.

Take a listen:

Who is the little dude in all of their artwork? I want to ask them.

They are making a few stops in Tokyo too, so be sure to catch them while they are still playing small venues.

If you are in Tokyo this April, don’t miss the rare chance to see the scene from the inside.

Hope to catch you there! and, remember.. support your local artists!

Until next time 😛
