BRAT in Tokyo – Charli XCX’s Japan

How was Brat received in Japan?

Brat went mostly under the radar in Japan following its release.

After a few months of some salarymen pondering big marketing decisions, Brat finally got its own promo in Japan, about 5 months after it was initially released worldwide.

The party scene in Tokyo doesn’t have much crossover with the UK, but that didn’t stop Japan from recreating Brat’s energy in its own way.

Brat’s Tenga Party

The Brat release party featured performances from Japanese artists. A mix of DJs, dancers, and smaller local musicians like MANON.

Presented by Tenga. Yessss, that Tenga. Fitting…

“That’s so brat” isn’t easy to translate. A lot of the context and culture gets lost. There are no lines of coke at Tokyo clubs.

After years and years of people mystifying Japanese culture – “You have to speak the language to understand how deep it is!” Yeah, brat too. πŸ˜›

Matcha is so Brat.

If Brat green has you craving matcha, there’s a collab for that, too.

Miyashita Park is an open space shopping area behind Tower Records in Shibuya.

The Matcha Tokyo featured a photo collection of Charli and served special Brat matcha for a limited week.

Charli’s Previous Visits to Japan

This wasn’t the first time Charli visited Japan.

She has a song with CAPSULE producer Yasutaka Nakata and Harajuku icon Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Charli was interviewed on television after her song “Boom Clap” became a big hit in Japan.

She said her favorite Japanese artists were the pop group Perfume and Y2K icon Tommy February 6, who is making big waves with her revival in 2025.

I agree with Charli, February is fantastic!

Hope you enjoyed taking a look at Charli sharing her art and UK party culture around Japan.

Until next time. ❀
